SEPTA LRV 9095, southbound Route 23 on 12th St at Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia
(December 1997)
Trolleys were replaced with diesel buses on Route 23 in September 1992, but rail and energized wire remain in place. Each year, SEPTA operates "Holiday Trolleys" in Center City on weekends between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, using the Route 23 tracks. 1997 saw additional hourly "Market to Market" trolleys running as far south as Snyder Avenue; for 1998 trolleys turned back at Bainbridge Street due to track replacement on 11th Street. The recent renewal of rail on this portion of the line provides some hope for the permanent return of Light Rail vehicles to the Route 23 at some point in the future.
SEPTA is currently in the procurement process for twelve low floor LRVs
